My Book Shelf - ASCHENPUTTEL

~ click images to make biggerer ~

ASCHENPUTTEL (c) 1965 by Der Kinderbuchverlag Berlin

This book is THE favorite from my childhood.
Looking through the pages, I can see why I like to read and write fantasy.

Look, all of the elements are there: bats, rats and black cats.
And since it's the Grimm version of Cinderella, it's not sanitized.

It's written in German. Here's the English translation.

I didn't get my image of a prince from here, though.
This guy would never do it for me, except for the hair. I like the hair.

You can still buy this book for 9,95 euros or 13.58 US.

Top Ten Films They Should Have Made Blogfest

I loved Richard Harris  as Dumbledore. He looks exactly as he should.

I love Michael Gambon but he's a bit intense in the part. To me, Dumbledore is way more irreverent.

The person I would have liked best as Dumbledore would be Peter O'Toole à la High Spirits.

He has the right smile. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of him with a long beard.

Another Harry Potter character whose actor wasn't quite right was Sirus Black.

I would go with either Christian Bale

Of course, I keep forgetting that harry potter is meant to be a children's story.

I don't like Tom Cruise. Never have.
[No link. No picture. He's lucky I said his name.]
I like him even less since he married his daughter.
(Come on. You know, Katie Homes looks like his daughter and
she is the right age to be his daughter.
Why do you think her eyes always look so vacant?)
So naturally, he ruined Interview with the Vampire for me.

Stuart Townsend (on the right) was perfect in the role as seen in Queen of the Damned.

Interview with the Vampire should be remade with him.

Other actors that can be replaced to drastically improve any movie they are in would be:
Kevin Costner, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.

Go to
Ellie Garritt
to see people who probably did this the correct way.

I’m Not Doing This Because I’ve Been Tagged, No Matter How It Looks

I was tagged by Eric Alder from Bubba’s Place and Bifocal Univision and Haiku Koo-Koo to do this meme. I don’t usually do these when I get tagged but it’s been ages and I got nothing else. I will not keep you in suspense – I do not pay meme’s forward.

1. Why did you start blogging? Because I obviously have too much time on my hands.

2. If you could travel anywhere in the world with no restriction of costs, where would it be and why? Switzerland. Zuzana says it’s beautiful and I believe her.

3. Did you have a teacher in school that had a great influence on your life? My 6th grade teacher whose name I can’t remember because I am bad with names. She loved my writing. And she didn’t think I was strange.

4. If you could spend the day with a famous person, who would it be, and what would you do?
Living or dead? Living – Craig Ferguson. His mind is just wacky and he looks like a fun, nice guy. Dead – Any and all of the strong fascinating queens: Elizabeth, Catherine, Cleopatra, Boudicca. Lone stereotype breakers.

5. Toilet paper - over or under? If you like anything but over you are evil. Evil, I say.

6. Name one thing in your life that you would do over if possible. Listen even less to my mother.

7. Tell about your pets - if any. The Codes. He was 9 in July.

8. Do you live in a small town or a large town? (You don't have to name the town) It used to be a small town but now it is the megatropolis called JersyPennYork.

Association Meme

 Alice said: Gorilla

Nessa said: Watch Out!

i am tagging:

The first thing I thought of when Alice said gorilla was Ape, the ape best friend of George of the Jungle (cartoon version.) Watch Out! is the tagline that is yelled just before George slams into a tree.

Play the Association game between
September 1st and October 1st for a chance to win

$50 cash.

1. Anyone can play, whether they have been tagged or not.
2. Include the rules and logo in your post.
3. Copy out all the responses that were made before you.
4. Link to each of the people who responded before you.
5. Put in your response. Your response can be as little as a single word or as much as 100 words. It can be a word, a phrase, an image, a song, a video, a story, or a short rant.
6. Tag anyone you would like to challenge to play this game. You do not have to tag anyone.
7. You can do this any time you run across it, even if you were one of the previous responders.

Tales on Tuesday – All in the Family

Serial killers fascinate me. Not what they do or their modus operandi; not who they kill or why. While I feel for their victims and the victims’ families, I am interested in the perpetrators. Who they were as children, who their families were and how they interacted.

To me, evil has always been cloaked in the ordinary. Monsters are not ugly, with misshapen toes or boils upon their noses. Monsters speak softly and beguile you with a smile. They are not crazy lunatics wrapped in faded and dirty blankets self talking as they walk down the street. They comb their hair and iron their shirts. They befriend your parents or hand out papers for the teacher, then do bad things in the woods.

Eddie raped and killed seven girls by the time he was caught at age nineteen. If he hadn’t been caught in the act on victim number seven, no one would have believed it. Eddie stood five feet four, had short brown hair cut trim. He wore button up dress shirts and creased his pants. He spoke quietly and never got excited.

There were several missing girls who the authorities believed were Eddie’s victims and very little evidence in the cases, so a deal was cut. The authorities allowed a plea of guilty due to insanity (Eddie couldn’t remember his deeds) and Eddie agreed to undergo psychiatric treatment and participate in a serial killer study. Eddie agreed to take sodium thiopental so the bodies of the six other victims (if there really were any, as Eddie would say) could be found and the families could have closure.

Serving a twenty to thirty year sentence in a psychiatric prison, Eddie underwent many hours of interviews. He was questioned about his past which he said was normal. He showed the doctors pictures of a close knit family: father, mother, two sisters and Eddie between the two girls. He did well in school. He went to church every Sunday with his family. His father was a lector. His mother helped with charities.

The doctors spoke Eddie’s parents. They were shocked that Eddie was accused of these things and had a hard time believing it. He was such an ordinary child. They stood behind their son in spirit and in body at all of his trials. They prayed for him. They never found any dead animals when he was little. He never fought them over any of the rules and they considered themselves fairly strict. Eddie was very punctual.

Eddie’s mother would not speak to anyone except her husband about Eddie. When the doctors first requested a dialogue to see if there was anything in Eddie’s past that might have led his parents to think something might be wrong with Eddie, husband and wife tried to recall any incidents that might have been clues. They decided nothing about him rang any warning bells. Mother did tell Father there was that one time that Younger Sister told Mother that Eddie had forced her to have sex with him, but they were sure that was just something boys did.

10 Things You Might Not Know

I stole this from Quilly, who stole it from Cherie, who stole it from…and so on and so on.
0 - green butterfly

The idea is to list 10 things – right off the top of your head – that we would only know about you if we knew you really well. 10 random things ranging anywhere on your personal map that make you a tad distinctive? Or just plain weird? Think quickly. Don’t go for deep. Go for quirky. Don’t try to put them in any kind of order and don’t make them long. Just start typing.

1. I avoid direct sunlight. I wear sunglasses even on cloudy days.

2. I have about 20 umbrellas but never use them.

3. I don’t wear t-shirts or baseball caps, ever.

4. I wear my wedding ring on my right hand.

5. I will eat almost any vegetable raw, but cooked celery and cabbage are just yucky.

6. I like salt, straight up. Always have since I was 2 years old.

7. My cousin shot me with an arrow.

8. I like to play in the mud.

9. I stand under the light of the full moon each month at midnight, naked, even in Winter, in my backyard. (Just don't look. You might go blind.)

10. I like crab legs and shrimp but I don’t like lobster.

Book Review – Moving In

Come back a little later today, Tom. I have been writing. I have thousands of new words. Well, the words aren’t new. The way I put them together is new. That might not be very new either, but there’s lots of them in one place that might make some sort of sense. Maybe.

Pub. Date: February 2010
Novella

Many of you may have seen Alice Audrey from Alice’s Restaurant commenting here. You may know her from her own blog.

Alice Audrey released her first book, Moving In, February 2010. I read it Sunday night. If you like sweet, fast-paced romance with a hot hero and all of the misunderstandings that two people can throw at each other, then you will love this story.

Moving In is well written, as you would expect if you’ve read her ongoing story Suzie’s House (a story related to Moving In) which she posts on her blog every Friday. Moving In is contemporary in its time frame and sex is only slightly suggested.

Do yourself a favor, buy Moving In and learn how Diane and Trigvey connect.

My only complaint, dear Publisher, is that it was not long enough. I need more. Hurry up and publish another book by Alice and let it be longer.

From Alice, I want to know from where the name Trigvey comes.
0 - green butterfly Not only has Alice Audrey released her first book, Moving In, but she has also created an Association meme. Here’s the lovely meme button.

Now, I’m supposed to tag someone else or leave it open ended which is the option I choose since I’m not really sure how this works. I can’t tell if I should follow the other players around and associate to their words or if Alice will collect them all and then post the list.
I’m really confused.

One Single Impression - Insomnia

02cold seeps into my veins thickening
my limbs restless in over extended
exertion numb with thoughts unbidden
unceasing ramblings toss and turn
over wrinkled sheets of white pebbles
pocked and lumpy ticking tock
talking awake roused alert and
exhausted wide open mind
