Flash 55 - The Accidental Gardener

"Nanho Blue" Butterfly Bush Buddleia (on the corner), Salvia (purple across the back), Coreopsis (yellow in the middle), Coneflower (white in the front)

All of my plants are perennials because I'm not doing this again. They are officially on their own.

Astilbe (in the back) miniature blue hydrangea (on corner) Hosta (under the mailbox)

They are in the shade of a holly (full of berries) and a dogwood.

I’m not much of an outdoors sort of person
I have to wear sunglasses on cloudy days
The sunshine is ok but only if I’m in the shade
God made air-conditioners for a reason
I cried when my mother made me pick blueberries
Flowers should take care of themselves
So I deserve lots of points

I'm trying to identify these bushes. They were here when we bought the house. They are evergreens. Right now they are over 15 feet tall. I thought they might be a form of Privet but I don't recall there be flowers in the Spring or berries in the Fall. I don't think there are thorns deep inside. The birds love hanging out in them. Any ideas?

  1. My Grandmother called the 'butterfly bushes.' Having them in your garden is good for the environment, good for butterfly's, good for things that eat butterfly's but also good for you. They are such beautiful animals.

    1. All of the flowers I just planted are attractive to butterflies, bees and humming birds. I've had butterflies and fat bumble bees already. Just waiting for the birds.

  3. Your yard looks wonderful. Mine looks like sheep dip. I'm far too lazy to make it look like anything else.
I don't sweat profusely, but I run hot. I generally don't even put a cover on when I sleep.

    1. I worked for 5 hours on Wednesday. Spread out over the next 10 years that works out to a 1/2 hour a year. That's the best I can do.

  5. Perennials are the way to go ... with a few well placed annuals for that pop of color! I love the hydrangea and the trees frame everything nicely! Looks well worth the sweat to me.

    1. The hydrangea is a favorite. I am proud of the results of my laziness.

    2. But hydrangeas needs perennial pruning. And the weeds need perennial removing and oh and oh . . .

  6. I must admit, I don't do as much gardening as I should. Nice one.

  8. I have no idea what kind of bushes those are.

I'm with you. I love to have green things around me, but am not at all into tending them.

  9. I love gardening but I know --o definitely do I know--how much work it is. You get many points for doing it if its not your thing. I switched to perennials a long time ago, but they have a whole different logic to them--you picked some good ones, however. Not sure what your big bush is--looks like wax-leaf privet to me, if you live down south--the flowers are tiny and might not be prolific if you have it in shade.

    1. I was thinking the bushes are privets, too, but they a huge. I will look for the berries this fall and the flowers next spring to see.

  11. I'm the same way about being outdoors: sunglasses and shade, and I prefer temps that are no higher than about 70. Gardening is definitely not for me. :)

    Have a great weekend!

    1. I'm with both of you. I don't like it any hotter than about 70, and I don't like it colder than 40.

  12. I have the same idea and like you plant mainly perennials. I love to plants that reseed and are hearty, like cosmos. I like being outside but don't like plants I have to baby (we have babies for that, grandkids in my case).

  17. I soooo like your sardonic 55. You have a lovely "garden" I soooo love the way the USA refers to it as "the yard."
