Flash 55 – Before He Was Famous

Edward Teach stared at the costume in the window. He’d buy the entire ensemble with his pick-pocketing money but it really wasn’t what he wanted. He preferred six shooters in leather holsters to sabers hung from belt loops. His mom said she would never let him grow up to be a cowboy. He’d teach her.0 - green butterflyflash553 Hosted by G-Man @ Mr. KnowItAll – Click Here
Write a story in exactly 55 words.

Weirsdo from Stuffed Animal Tales suggested "All In the Family" as a theme for Tales on Tuesday. (April 13, 2010)

I learned from the comments on yesterday's post here on my blog

Alice's Thursday Thirteen 55: Things That Can Keep Me From Reciprocating Your Comments. If you do a netiquette (coined by Quilly) post, let me know. I'd love to read what you think.

  1. Maybe Willie shouldn't have written, "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Pirates" instead.

Something about this alternate history story reminded me of ... me!

  15. G-Man already beat me to my comment on anachronisms. I thought perhaps you were going for a kid choosing a Halloween costume.

Then I looked at a calendar.

Stories of Blackbeard are quite popular where I live. He spent a lot of time around the NC coast.

  16. so mom had the last word anyway? ;)
well, he opted for second best and made himself famous...

  17. G-Man and Mojo: I did take loads of liberties with Blackbeard's life story but this was more a play on words than a history lesson.

  28. I don't know if I am dating myself too much here, but your 55 reminds me of the old Rocky & Bullwinkle shows where they had "Fractured Fairy Tales". The stories were just a little different than you remember them.

  29. Absolutely love the play on words, here. Good ole Blackbeard- this is a perfect story of how he came to be...

  30. Loved it. It tells just enough and after reading it, I just sat and let my mind wander - picturing "the rest of the story."

  34. Great 55 Flash on Blackbeard's early days. But, I wouldn't want to be in his mother's shoes. Arr...

  35. There are definitely worse things that being a cowboy! Very creative story.

I enjoyed reading the other thoughts about netiquette. I am surprised more people didn't participate -- maybe they didn't want to seem like they were griping. I was concerned about that myself and didn't want to make anyone feel bad, but a few people said thanks because they didn't realize that some readers found some things to be a problem. And I learned some things myself. I think it helps make us all better bloggers and commenters.
