Boy Meets Girl in 55

Derek pushed and shoved his buddies as they stood in line at the theater.

The boys laughed as Cindy, Derek’s crush from math class, fell to the ground in front of them.

Derek held out his hand to help her up.

He ignored his buddies' jests as he bought Cindy's ticket and escorted her inside.

flash-55

Flash 55 is hosted by G-Man (Mr. Knowitall). The idea is to write a story in exactly 55 words. If you want to take part pop over and let G-man know when you’ve posted your 55. Thanks G-man for hosting.

Some additional Kindle notes:

The battery life is very long with a fairly short recharge period.

It is extremely portable, light and thin. Plus, I can carry three or four books without throwing out my back.

My husband got it for me because he thinks the number of books I have upstairs will cause the ceiling to fall in from the weight.  :)

I do like the idea of saving trees.

I, too, am a book snob. There’s nothing like holding one and turning the pages, but this device allows me to continue to support my favorite authors (as an aspiring paid author, I like to buy the works of other writers) without taking up so much space. Very few people I know read [shocking] or read the same type of books I do [not so shocking] so book swapping isn’t an option. Plus, I have a hard time giving up a book once I’ve bought it.

And I can’t stress the ease with which I can read on the Kindle. It’s like using a large print book without the added weight. The adjustable text size is wonderful.

  4. I have been trying to reduce "War and Peace" to 55 words, but things are not working out too well. Maybe I should try "Anna Karenina" or "Doctor Zhivago"

  6. What you said about the Kindle reminds me of an episode of Star Trek Next Generation where the captain was reading a regular book instead of the Kindle-like reader and talked about how he likes the feel of holding a real book in his hands and similar things you said.

  7. Wow that was a great 55. You are such a wonderful writer.

Thanks for the info on the Kindle too. My oldest is an avid reader, this would be great for her.

  9. Awwww... boy gets girl! I like it!

You ARE making that Kindle sound mighty appetizing! I'm thinking I might have to look into it a little more...

  10. Hi Nessa, your '55' story today is a chivalrous 50's type situation.

About the Kindle, can a person speed read with it? I run my fingers of one hand across the pages especially when I speed read and flip the pages with the other.
I definitelly like to save trees, I am related to a 'Tree Hugger.'

  13. Aw, that was nice of Derek.

Quit making me drool for the Kindle!!! Like I wasn't jealous enough already.

I know what you mean about few people reading. When Mr. Al worked as a mover, he was shocked at how few books he had to pack, and the fact that every single one of them had at least one TV.

It's great to see you active again!

  14. Story was good as usual.
It is really good to know about the Kindle. I wonder if my mom would like one, since she is institutionalized.

  15. I am reading this as I sit at the airport waiting to board a plane with my Kindle tucked into my carry-on. I love it. I've had it for over a year and I think I may have already paid for it with the savings from not buying books. I thought I would miss the "book feel" but I really haven't. 19. Don't have a Kindle. Aren't they expensive? And what if you don't like it after buying it?

I usually donate books to the public library after reading them. I support other writers and get a tax deduction by donating.

  20. Cute start to a relationship.

I'm not opposed to Kindles, but I'm reluctant to add another electronic thing to my life.

  21. You'd make a great kindle spokesperson, know what I mean? (that's less than 55 words too.)

Thanks for your last comment on my blog - it was really very nice (you make me blush.)

  25. The name Derek brings to mind a bully boy who kicked me in the thigh as a child. So I was surprised when your character of that name made a kind gesture!

  32. I had never heard of the Kindle until recently when another blogger wrote about it. I haven't tried to read a book in this form but I would be willing to try.

    Have a great weekend!

  33. I first heard of this over on Doc F's site. Kindle away I say!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Aww, young love.

You know at first I wasn't into the idea of Kindle, but I was wrong. It's not that anyone is trying to do away with books. I think that "new" things always face a bit of resistance before they catch on.

  35. Nessa it is awesome to have you posting again!

  36. Go, Derek!

Nessa - I still don't have an ebook reader. I wondered about the length of the charge. LOL about the roof falling. That sounds like something my husband would say. Still, a book addiction is relatively healthy. :)

  38. We have a guy who reads this kind of fiction at our spoken word open mic. We also did some six word memoirs one night. You might find this site interesting: http://www.smithmag.net/sixwords/

  39. Nessa I like the idea of ebooks...there are so many you read/buy and never look at again. But occasionally you read a book and need its company for ever. In paper form too. A Kindle wouldn't cut it for that kind of long term relationship.

Try it out. Read Machine Dreams by Jayne Anne Phillips and let me know if you can survive without a (real) copy.
