A Poem a Day #4 - Copper Chickens

Poem a Day - For today’s prompt, I want you to pick an animal; make that animal the title of your poem; then, write a poem. You could be very general with your animal title (“Bees” or “Lion”) or specific (“Flipper” or “Lassie”). You could even be very silly with something like “Tony, the Tiger,” I guess (that tiger on the cereal box).

Copper Chickens

Barnyard fowl
roost in an aerie

strut in the yard
all bright and airy

copper chickens
with a nod and a bow

flap tawny wings
perched on a bough

plump fat hens
sisterhood clique

sing solidarity
cluck, clack, click

  1. Those silly copper chickens
make me laugh like the dickens

    Their sisterhood clique
    makes them anything but meek

All the boys come a running
    cuz they are so stunning

  3. Pretty little clucks,
    Sittin' on their eggs,
    When they stop laying,
    Stewed chicken legs!

  5. Thom: You are King of the Rhyming Roost.

Cherie: Chickens are kind of comical.

Quilly: That’s the way it works; D

    Indrani: Thanks.

Noe Noe: That’s cool, that you have chickens. I used to feed them on various relatives’ farms when I was young.

  6. Thank you. Now I have a reason to write poetry again. I have a poetry blog also but haven't written anything for ages. Thanks also for your comments on my regular blog. I linked you - BTW Any relation to Val? Or does he spell his last name differently... if I weren't so lazy I would look it up.

  7. I thought it was fun, too, Actonbell.

Perfect nursery rhyme. Anyone expecting a grandchild soon should learn that poem.

  8. Jay: Val is on a different branch of the family tree that branched off a few generations back.

    Actonbell: I enjoyed it too.

Doug: My grandchild will have enough reasons for trauma.

  10. Oh how cute! I LOVE the use of the homophones! Shoot! I never would have thought of that!

  11. Juliana: They make me think of high school kids.

Melli: You are the only one to mention the homophones. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!

  12. I like the homophones too. Probably other people noticed but were too lazy to Google in order to properly distinguish among homophones, homonyms, and homographs, the way I had to--only to find that Melli beat me to it anyway.
